Just started birth control. Possibility of pregnancy?

I started my period June 3rd. The packaging instructs me to start it on the first day of my period, which I did not do. My doctor said it was fine to start taking it now, though. The brand claims it is effective after a week of the medication...but does that mean if I start it on the first day of my period?
